Microdentistry with KaVo

Modern caries management begins with a professional cleansing of the tooth surfaces before examining for primary lesions, cavities and secon-dary caries. After the findings and the estimation of the risk factors, there then finally follows, depending on the diagnosis, the therapy planning; the prophylactic measures; sealing; or where indicated a minimum-invasive preparation with the appropriate filling therapy.
The current objective of minimum-invasive dentistry with maximum pres-ervation of tooth tissue presupposes first and foremost an early diagnosis of caries.

Before examining the tooth surfaces and using the
KaVo DIAGNOdent pen to support caries diagnosis, carrying out a professional cleansing of the teeth is indicated. Existing soft and especially hard coatings, which can lead to false findings, are thereby eliminated.
Cleaning of fissures and removal of stains, as well as soft coatings, is achieved by use of the
KaVo PROPHYflex powder blaster, without damaging the enamel surfaces or traumatising soft tissue. The operator can carry out the powder blasting either with bicarbonate of soda powder or with calcium carbonate pearls. Tenacious stains and sub-gingival or supra-gingival calculus can be removed by using
KaVo SONICflex Lux Scaler or alternatively the
KaVo KEY 3 Plus dental laser. The low noise levels of the scaler makes possible a painless and particularly gentle treatment procedure.
DIAGNOdent pen values from 0-13 indicate healthy tooth tissue. As a rule, an appropriate fluorination is sufficient.
Values from 14-20 indicate the beginning of demineralisation. Here, if necessary, the implementation of local antibacterial measures such as, for example, the employment of the HealOzone unit to deactivate existing caries bacteria is expedient. By high risk of caries, fissure sealing can additionally be indicated.
With
DIAGNOdent pen values between 21 und 29, a marked demineralisation of the tooth tissue is already in progress. According to the individual caries risk to the patient, here preventive therapy in the form of a sterilisation of the fissure using HealOzone followed by sealing can be sufficient. However, a high risk of caries could also make it necessary for restorative therapy including minimum-invasive opening of the fissure, application of ozone, and then followed by a filling.

For minor carious defects, the reaming of a fissure as well as the removal of hard tissue, the air abrasion unit
KaVo RONDOflex plus is as eminently suitable as the
KaVo KEY 3 Plus dental laser or the
KaVo SONICflex Lux Scaler. By pinpoint preparation with corundum powder particles, the unit works extremely efficiently directly on target, thereby protecting the tooth tissue.
In cases of dentine caries with
KaVo DIAGNOdent pen values of over 30, the excavation of the heavily carious location is absolutely essential. At the conclusion of the excavation, an ozone application using HealOzone to deactivate possible residual caries bacteria in the cavity is an effective measure in preventing secondary caries. An appropriate filling therapy concludes the treatment.
Positive early detection of caries is the basis for sustainable health of the teeth. Early stage caries detected by means of the DIAGNOdent pen enables non- or minimum invasive treatment procedures with maximum protection of the tooth tissue. The employment of DIAGNOdent pen for diagnosis combined with the
HealOzone unit to deactivate the bacteria makes possible in many cases a totally painless, sustainable therapy against caries. The HealOzone unit offers an innovative alternative and a supplement to the established methods of fighting caries on fissures, smooth surfaces and the cervical area, opening up to the dental practice a variety of treatment and prophylactic options.
