I had the opportunity to test the new Leica M320 dental microscope as an endodontologist with many years of experience using different dental microscopes ranging in sophistication from entry-level to high-end models.Elegant designWhat struck me most was its elegant design. With its clear lines and the complete absence of visible cords, the M320 gives the impression of being very tidy and easy to clean. Because it is extremely compact, the system is mobile. This enables easy positioning and integration into the work flow as well as space-saving parking. The well-known ergonomic Leica binoculars and accessories are also available. In addition to its ease of handling and good ergonomics, the M320's high-quality optics, operating field illumination, and built-in video and photo documentation system make it an excellent surgical microscope. Innovative LED light sourceThe Leica M320 is equipped with an innovative LED light source that generates remarkably bright and perhaps somewhat cool white light. Thanks to the LED technology, no special cooling system is needed. Anyone who has ever had to work with a xenon light source will be pleased at the longevity and cost-efficiency of the light-emitting diodes. I found the illumination of the operating field in particular and the shadow-free illumination of deep cavities and root canals quite impressive. The system also has a built-in orange filter. Further highlightsOther features of the new microscope are its photo and video documentation functions. The camera makes it possible to record video images in HD quality and to take still images with 3-megapixel resolution. A built-in spot light aperture improves the sight on the operation field. It is activated by remote control. The monitor is designed as a tool to allow assistants to watch the surgery on the one hand, and to play back films and display still images for patient demonstration purposes on the other. The data can be saved on an integrated SD memory card. ConclusionThe new M320 sets new standards for microscopes of its class. It can be recommended with no reservations to both beginners and advanced users who do not require technical gadgetry such as power zoom and magnetic coupling.
